Flowchart of slate processing

The flowchart consists of slate quarrying, slate crushing, slate grinding and the screening of crushed slate.

The quarrying of slate is a very complicated process. The processing plant consists of several machines. The first machine used in the process is the excavation equipment. Then, in the blasting process, slates will be blasted into pieces. In the next step, machines such as rock hammer, falling ball, lower crusher, and gyratory crusher will further crush the pieces into lump particles. In the screening process, the screen will sort out particles smaller and larger than 30mm separately. Coarse materials will be conveyed to the crusher for another round of crushing while the fine materials will go to the grinder. We can adjust the size of the materials in accordance with the requirement of our clients.

Slate crushing

The crushing process of slate can be divided into two, three or even four sections. You can choose the process you want based on your specific needs. The crushed slate can be used to produce concrete or as the raw material of cement.

Mines that have just been excavated are pretty big in size. Mines extracted from an open pit, for example, reaches up to 1000mm. Therefore, we need to go through several crushing processes before we crush the slate into small particles tens of microns in size. Large factory usually crushes slate through coarse crushing, medium crushing and fine crushing process, a three-section-crushing method (sometimes four sections). By doing so, the slate can be gradually reduced to as small as 30mm.

Slate grinding

The grinding process is often performed in a closed circuit, consisting of screening and separation. Materials discharged from crusher will be screened and separated in the process. Particles that meet size requirement will become finished product while those failing to meet the size standard will be returned to the crusher (grinder) for further processing. The quality ratio (cycle load rate) of returned coarse materials against the grinded materials is relatively high. The quality ratio (separation efficiency) of qualified materials separated by the screening and separation equipment against materials fed into the equipment is relatively high.

The protolith of slate is constituted of clay, silty or neutral tuff. It can be peeled into slices along the slate texture. The color of slate varies with the impurities it contains. Slates are mainly produced in South Africa, India, Spain, Britain, Italy and Australia, with South Africa being the largest producer. Besides, countries including Japan, South Korea, North Korea, France and Bulgaria also produce slate. China is a country rich in slate resources, which can be found mainly in suburbs of Beijing, Shandong, Shanxi, Hubei, Zhejiang, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi and Tianjin.
